Why is carbohydrates
important?
Carbohydrates are an important source of energy for growing, active
children.
How much
carbohydrates do toddlers need?
After age 1 year, it is recommended that carbohydrates supply 50%
to 60% of daily calories.
What kind
of carbohydrates are best?
Complex carbohydrates such as pasta, breads, cereals, rice, and
vegetables provide energy as well as nutrients. Fiber, the undigestible
carbohydrate component of plant foods, is also important because
it helps produce softer and more frequent stools.
Simple carbohydrates, such as sugar, honey, and candy, provide only
