Natural Carotenoids and Your Child's Health
Importance
of carotenoids in breast milk
Breast milk is the preferred source of nourishment for infants because
it contains a variety of nutrients not universally found in infant
formula or full cream milk. Among the nutrients contained in breast
milk are carotenoids, which may offer enhanced protection to the
infant.
Studies have
shown the universal presence of carotenoids in breast milk, even
in that of undernourished mothers. Colostrum in particular is especially
rich in carotenoids. These facts suggest that carotenoids are important
nutrients for infants.
Beta-carotene
is the main carotenoid in breast milk, constituting about 25% of
total carotenoids' content. Other carotenoids, such as alpha-carotene,
gamma-carotene, lycopene, and lutein, have been identified.
Carotenoids
are also found in numerous other tissues and fluids of the human
body, including the blood. Undernourished children often have lower
serum concentrations of carotenoids than their well-nourished counterparts,
and often have serious health problems. These children would probably
benefit from a diet rich in natural carotenoids.
Sources and
benefits of natural carotenoids
Natural carotenoids (also known as carotene extract) are naturally
occurring coloured pigments that are found in many plants, including
fruits and vegetables. Rich food sources include carrots, sweet
potatoes, mangoes, pumpkin, and leafy green vegetables.
Carotenoids
are important in our diet, playing a vital role in human health
and well-being. They help maintain normal growth and enhance vision.
Carotenoids have been associated with antioxidant properties and
protection from cancer.
Carotenoids
and Vitamin A: healthy cells, better vision
Certain carotenoids are important because they give rise to vitamin
A. Beta-carotene is the most potent of these vitamin A precursors
and has the highest vitamin A activity of all known carotenoids.
An essential
nutrient, vitamin A plays an important role in cell differentiation
in infants. Vitamin A is essential for normal growth and helps maintain
healthy cells. It is also known as the eyesight vitamin and helps
promote better vision.
Antioxidant
activity
Carotenoids, beta-carotene and alpha-carotene in particular, are
known to neutralize free radicals. Free radicals can cause cell
damage, which may be carcinogenic. The antioxidant activity of carotenoids
accounts for their anticancer effect.
Your child
may benefit from a mixture of natural carotenoids
The reasons why should now be obvious. The health and well-being
of your child should not be compromised. Ensuring that natural carotenoids
are included in the diet is one way to enhance and improve your
child's health.
Beta-carotene
alone may not be sufficient; evidence points to the value of a variety
of carotenoids for good nutrition. One rich source of natural carotenoids
is red palm oil, a safe and well-tolerated ingredient that can enhance
nutrition. It contains a carotenoid mixture of approximately 60%
to 65% beta-carotene, 30% to 35% alpha-carotene, and 5% to 10% other
essential carotenoids.
Natural carotenoids
have "Generally Recognised as Safe" (GRAS) status in the
United States.
